WNV Symptoms

Are there any signs or symptoms that are specific to a horse with WNV, and not specific of other neurologic diseases?

Dr. Dan Kenney, Ontario Veterinary College

As far as clinical signs, horses with WNV infection may show non-specific signs such as; change in behaviour, no interest in eating and fever. They may also have more specific signs pertaining to the neurologic system (brain and spinal cord). These include; more marked behavioural changes, unsteadiness when moving, abnormal posture, improper foot placement, blindness and seizures. The affected animals may also show muscle trembling and be very sensitive to touch, sound or menacing gestures. There are no signs that are specific to WNV infection. Many WNV infected horses that I have examined have muscle trembling associated with the muzzle and triceps muscles. Keep in mind that horses' muzzles normally show trembling when using their sensitive whiskers to examine their environment.
