Lightning
We live an area where dry lightening is common during the hot summer months. Do you recommend lightening rods? We have a steel barn - are there special concerns for this type of structure?Bob Webb, Manager, Fire Safety, Woodbine Entertainment Group
I strongly recommend having lightning arrestors (rods) installed on your barn. It is widely known, at least around Ontario, barn fires usually occur, in the spring and summer months and have been caused by lightning strikes and usually these barns are unprotected without lightning arrestors, that are grounded and prevent lightning strikes from igniting the barns, when properly installed. If you choose to go this route I would recommend, that you contact a licensed Lightning Arrestor installer and have them do the job. I believe you can find them in the yellow pages of the phone book or you could contact the closest farm supplier in your area. They should have a name of a company that could help you out. This also may give you a reduction on your barn fire insurance policy if you contact your insurance company and let them know that you are intending on doing this.
