Horse Behaviour & Safety Online Course Students Learn to Speak HorseMarch 2018

Story: Jackie Bellamy-Zions

PriclessGuelph, Ontario – If you are planning a trip to France, it will enhance your experience to learn a little French. If you plan to ride a horse, it is only logical to learn to ‘speak horse’. Failing to learn French may result in a mixed up menu order but failing to grasp the language of the horse could end in a trip to the hospital. A hefty percentage of horse related injuries are due to human error and could be prevented if the handler had basic education in safety. An investment in the Horse Behaviour and Safety online course being offered by Equine Guelph for youth (14 – 17) and adults is absolutely priceless. By popular demand, the next offering of this three week online short course is March 26 – April 13, 2018.

“The Horse Behaviour and Safety course is a must for both experienced and non-experienced horse lovers, owners and riders.” - Donna Elkow-Nash, Horse Owner (AEF)

A variety of important topics will be covered: Horse Behaviour – Wild vs Stabled, How Horses See and Hear, Herd Behaviour – How Horses Interact with Each Other, Horse Handling – Basic Safety Around Horses, Rider/Helmet Safety, Safe Trailering – Basics, Fire Safety, Safety around the Barn and Paddocks, Returning from an Injury.

“Through learning how horses perceive the world around them, their human handlers can develop safe best practices for working with them,” says Gayle Ecker, director of Equine Guelph.

Special Guest speaker, Dr. Rebecca Gimenez will return sharing wisdom gained from her extensive background in teaching Large Animal Rescue around the globe. Gimenez will be answering your questions in the discussion forums for both the youth and adult offering Horse Behaviour and Safety.

The discussion groups also facilitate a great deal of learning from each other. Why learn from the school of hard knocks when you can share and learn from others? TheHorsePortal courses connect a large community, all across Canada and beyond, with the same passion for horses.
