Funding Application Document
The Equine Guelph Research Competition:
Each fall, Equine Guelph conducts a competition for research funding to eligible equine researchers from the University of Guelph and its Colleges.
Thanks to the efforts of our Equine Guelph Research Committee, and the financial contributions of our industry partners, worthy projects receive funding to explore priority concerns for the Ontario horse industry, such as: digestive issues and nutrition, air quality, track safety, equine diseases, injury prevention and treatment, and improved surgery techniques. Research into these important topics ensures the development of new and developing evidence-based information to support health, welfare and performance of horses.
Equine Guelph shares the results of research projects with the horse industry and general public through extensive communications with a global impact. Research news is accompanied with practical information horse owners can take back to the barn for optimal horse care. Key messaging is disseminated through social media and in-person presentations which leads dedicated learners back to the award-winning online education programs offered by TheHorsePortal.ca and EquineGuelph.ca.
The Equine Guelph Research Competition provides funding opportunities for new researchers in the field, contributing to the development of their unique research programs, while experienced researchers can apply their Equine Guelph funding towards leveraging additional funding from other agencies – allowing for even larger studies to be undertaken.
Research Competition Cycle:
- September – Call for new proposals is issued, funding permitting
- Mid-October – Researchers submit Letters of Intent (LOIs)
- Early November – Full proposal package due and proposals are sent out for external peer review from other universities to assess their scientific merit
- December – The Committee then convenes and allocates the available funding according to priority areas and scientific merit
- Mid-December – Project leaders are informed of their success and funding is distributed
